Château La Gardes historie begynder i 1756, hvor det dog var et beskedent foretagende drevet af familien Cassini. Vinproduktionen voksede betydeligt da slottet i 1877 blev solgt til familien Lacoste, der ligeledes ejede Grand Puy Lacoste i Pauillac. De formåede at genopbygge vinmarkerne, der stod i sørgelig forfatning efter Phylloxeras (vinlusen) hærgen. Parcellerne stod nu smukke og frugtbare igen, og huset udgav herefter en ny vin, som blev døbt Clos la Garde.

I 1921, efter Første Verdenskrig, opkøbte Louis Eschenauer Château La Garde. Han ejede samtidig Château Smith Haut Lafitte, så til at det hårde slid med at genopbygge vingården og parcellerne ikke skulle være forgæves.

I 1990 blev Château La Garde solgt til Maison Dourthe, der siden 1840 har opbygget et godt renommé for at producere store Bordeauxvine af høj kvalitet. Maison Dourthe ejer også Château Le Boscq, Château Reysson og står derudover for den daglige drift og vinproduktion for Château Belgrave og Château Grand Barrail Lamarzelle Figeac. Efter overtagelsen blev både slottet og vinkælderen grundigt renoveret med visionen om at skabe et endnu renere og mere præcist udtryk.

Crushed velvet textured tannins support a wide mouthfeel full of fresh and juicy red and black cherries, bright acidity with a salty, mineral undertone and soft liquorice and tobacco spices around the edges. Full, round, layered and so satisfying. Just opening up but will continue to give pleasure for a long time."

"What a great nose this has! The integration of black fruit and oak is spot on. Powerful, but with classical elegance, thanks to the polished tannins and the cool, mineral freshness that extends right through the long, refined finish. The best vintage ever from this chateau. Drink or hold."

"Coming from the consulting team of Michel Rolland, the 2016 Château La Garde is a beauty from the Graves region that delivers classic notes of tobacco and leafy herbs, gravelly minerality, smoked earth, and assorted dark fruits. Deep ruby/purple-colored, medium to full-bodied, with ripe tannins and a mouthfilling texture, I’d happily drink bottles over the coming 10-15 years."
